Cordish and P+L District Boot DJ Jazzy Jeff In Kansas City

7 Jun

UPDATE! Was it sounds system issues? More information and video here.

Just when it seemed like the racial issues and drama surrounding the Power and Light District were calming down Cordish decides to throw more drama and bad publicity at themselves.

DJ Jazzy Jeff is a hip hop and R&B record producer and turntablist. He is the first rapper to ever win a Grammy in 1989. On Saturday night he played a show in the Kansas City Live portion of the P+L District when according to his Twitter account he was kicked off. The confusion and anger was shared by Z-TRIP who was Jeff’s opening act.

Wow! The venue didn’t want any rap music. Jazzy Jeff got pulled off stage by the club 4 palyin TI. Fuckin crazy. What year is this? Good God (Via Z-TRIP’s Twitter stream)

My thoughts? This is tough because there has been no official word from Cordish but it seems like the best case scenario is that they were not at all knowledgeable of the acts they signed up for that concert. It is also interesting that the opening act was a rapper and according to him everything went really well. The worst case is something entirely different.

Even IF DJJJ played something that wasn’t agreed upon what could it have possibly been to warrant stopping the show and escorting him out? They have to understand how terrible this decision looks. The only thing that could possibly warrant something like this is a large scale concern for safety but nothing of that nature has been reported by anyone involved.

The Power and Light District Failed Kansas City Tonight. These happenings makes us look narrow minded and backwards. DJJJ apologized to the city for the events that took place.

Below are some more reactions from people that were there…

We thought there was a problem with the equipment and that’s why his set stopped. I am extremely upset that whomever hired him didn’t know what music he played. They made KC look ridiculous by pulling his set. (Via Patrick Binder)

His set was literally only 20 minutes before they pulled the plug…

…Thats all he was playing. He started with Big Pimpin, I heard A Milli, Biz Markie, T.I., Dead Prez, Collie Buddz, etc…

…Kansas City Retext this: P&L cut DJ Jazzy Jeff off for playing Hip-hop. Fuck P&L forever. Never attend there again…. (Via Dj_Sku)

Thanks for writing this, Zach. I posted a tweet asking Jeff not to equate the decisions of a few with the opinions of a whole city.

KC has made so much progress in my nine years here. I’d hate to see another KCPL (major) flub taint the city’s image. I hope Jeff will come to realize that.

This is yet another reason to not go to p&l.Jazzy Jeff is one of the best dj’s IN THE WORLD!!!!! It was a complete lack of respect to him and everybody that came out to see him.

Let me say that KCP&L doesn’t speak for everyone in KC. I love Z-Trip and DJ Jazzy Jeff. I am sorry that KCP&L let you down. I hope you come back to KC and play at a more intimate venue. P&L is not the best place to go…Much respect to the greatest artists around!

I’m trying not to take sides on this issue yet because I don’t know enough of the facts. However, this is a live recording of the concert. I don’t know about permanent damage to the speakers, but something is obviously wrong with the sound here.

Jason, more info and media is always a good thing but I hardly think a video of that quality could do a good job of representing the sound quality good or bad of a concert of that magnitude.
