Recording In Session

// July 30th, 2008 // 2 Comments » // Thoughts

My house has been nuts lately. People are moving in, moving out, and moving over. It even got switched around for a makeshift recording studio. Destination Go has a new member and the sounds that have been coming from them are an exciting thing to hear. There will be more on this at a later date.

Thanks goes out to Todd for almost burning this whole house down. Video shows it all.

The Bagillionth Batman Opinion You Have Heard This Week

// July 24th, 2008 // 1 Comment » // Thoughts

I get really tired of hype. Things wear me down quickly. I think spending so much time consuming different types of media and having friends that haven’t ever experienced stimulus in their life that didn’t result in a long drawn out opinion could be contributing factors to this.

Naturally Batman is the flavor of the week. People are burning up my ear, tearing up the TV, and ripping through the blogosphere to talk it up. I can’t think of a single “Comic Book Movie” I have really liked a lot. The absolute best result has always been an enjoyable experience with some cool visuals. The fact that it seems you have to “check your brain at the door” to enjoy almost every single movie around pretty much pisses me off. I set out to the theater a block away looking forward to disappointing people that ask me about the experience with a “meh, it was alright…I don’t see what the hype is about”. Just because…well…sometimes I can be a dick.

The actual verdict?

A masterpiece…

Truly a masterpiece of a film.

Let me try to put this in context for those of you who don’t know me in real life and only read my ramblings online. I don’t do this. I don’t fall for every little popular movie that makes big money at the box office.

Dark Knight planted a fear in me like no movie I have ever viewed in the a theater. It wasn’t a “Holy crap that guy behind you just jumped from the dark with a gun” type of fear. It was a glimpse into the looking glass of chaos. A view of the structure of society being riddled with uncertainty and fear at its very core. And it adds to the classic story of good against evil like no other film I have seen.

There are a lot of other great elements that this film brought to the table. Ledger’s performance was as strong as billed while Bale did a fantastic job for most part (his voice as Batman was a bit annoying). The visuals were stunning and story had a great pace. Even with these bits of excellence the sense of desperation and anxiety that plague the society and its people won’t be something I forget anytime soon.

Go see it. Even if you are a pretentious snob when it comes to movies.

On a completely different note this is a bad movie to a be a dog in. Alot of dogs get their asses handed to them in Dark Knight. Be nice to your pets folks.

Scattered Bits From This Weekend

Some work, some food, some tennis, some drinks, some El Rancho, and some bad Time Warner customer service.

I call that a quality span of time.

A few drinks with friends. Laid back night after work. The room was very dark so the video looks a little weird being brightened up.

WaiterRant.net Author To Speak In Kansas City

// July 16th, 2008 // 1 Comment » // Thoughts

I was flipping through some small fliers while having lunch at the Mixx today and when I read about an event the Kansas City Public Library is having. It is actually a series of events called “Order Up” described by the website below.

the Kansas City Public Library celebrates the triumphs and trials of service industry employees (waiters, waitresses, and cohorts) as well as the people who love them with a series of programs called Order Up! Tales from the Dining Room.

This seemed pretty interesting, something I might check out until I saw the final event.

Order Up! extends into August with Waiter Rant on Tuesday, August 5, at 6:30 p.m. in the Truman Forum at the Plaza Branch, 4801 Main St. Meet the world-wise (yet world-weary) Waiter, the anonymous author of the incredibly popular blog and newly published book Waiter Rant. His surprisingly universal take on the New York restaurant scene offers astute observations from the front lines and behind the scenes, complete with a shot of humor and a snark chaser.

I have been reading WaiterRant.net for a long time even mentioning it on the site and giving me an idea to post a few experiences I have had as a private club server here and here.

My boss and I are going to watch him speak in August and I can’t wait. His book comes out July 29th.

According to The Waiter, eighty percent of customers are nice people just looking for something to eat. The remaining twenty percent, however, are socially maladjusted psychopaths. Waiter Rant offers the server’s unique point of view, replete with tales of customer stupidity, arrogant misbehavior, and unseen bits of human grace transpiring in the most unlikely places. Through outrageous stories, The Waiter reveals the secrets to getting good service, proper tipping etiquette, and how to keep him from spitting in your food. The Waiter also shares his ongoing struggle, at age thirty-eight, to figure out if he can finally leave the first job at which he’s truly thrived.
