Frames!

// February 29th, 2008 // No Comments » // Thoughts

One of the things that is really lame about me as a photographer is the lack of work I have in my home. There are a few prints and some elementary school looking botched amateur mounting jobs but not a lot of good stuff hung on the wall. This should change soon. I bought a ton of random frames from an ad I saw on Craigslist. All kinds of random frames and mounts which will be fun to piece together to put around the house. We are going to go for a haphazard filled wall type look with stuff everywhere on the wall. Looking forward to the project.

Bryan and Tanya’s Wedding

Bryan has been a part of our family’s business for a long time. I was so excited to be part of his special day. It was a really nice ceremony and a great time seeing old friends. Below are just a few of the many photographs I got that day. Very pleased with the results.

3 Music Videos That Made Me Want To Become A Photographer

// February 21st, 2008 // No Comments » // Thoughts

Recently I ran across the post “30 Photos That Inspired Me to Learn Photography” at YouTheDesigner.com. There was some good work in there, a few things I had run across but mostly things that were new to me. It got me to thinking about putting together a collection of photographs that inspired me to learn photography. After some deep thought a problem arose; there aren’t any. I couldn’t really think of photographs that stood out in my mind before this all started. The big source of inspiration I found myself drawing from was music videos. I have always loved music videos, they always add such interesting narrative to songs and artists. I remember my friends growing up not understanding why I always wanted to flip on videos if nothing else was on. Three videos stood out amongst the crowd as inspirational.

Naked As We Came by Iron and Wine

This whole thing is beautifully crafted. The objects, time of day, and sequence in which it is shot make for a very special moment in time.

Life On a Chain by Pete Yorn

I have been trying to recreate and capture some of the moods and lighting situations in this video since I picked up a camera. The constant changes of focus give a great example of how one image can say different things by a change of perspective. You can almost smell the terrible well liquor being poured in this joint.

Remind Me by Royksopp

Much like the music of the group, this video is strange. It does a good job of reminding you that everything represents something. Even the smallest mundane things in life have a story behind them and are connected with everything else. This video tackles some of those stories. If you liked this video you would also like “Epple” by the same group.

Photo Info Roundup 2/18/08

- Epic Edits puts the question on the table about shots fired compared to shots used. The nature of digital and the low cost of storage makes a situation where photographers err on the side of more shots.

- Freelance Radio Episode 9 is out. One of the greatest pod casts around comes out with an episode focusing on the things you need to focus on to start doing business for yourself.

- Nate and Jaclyn show off fantastic engagement shots from a new couple on theblogisfound.

- Photopreneur has an older post highlighting some nightmare photography related court cases.

- Aperture 2.0 has arrived. I am pretty dug in with Lightroom and Photoshop meeting all my needs but I have never spent time with Aperture so it is certainly worth a shot.

Howl @ The Moon Photos

Had a really good time shooting these. The client was looking for some shots that showed a lot of people…groups of people enjoying the place and a nice shot of the front with the signage. I think that happened. This is a small sample of the shots taken that night.

There was a funny moment that evening. The staff was getting everything ready about half an hour before opening. You could tell people were quite nervous because you never know how a grand opening is going to shake out. I walked outside to get a feel for the crowd and couldn’t believe it. It is hard to imagine if you are not familiar with the KC Live portion of KCPL District but there were people waiting across the side of the building, down a large stairway, and into the street even winding around McFadden’s. I snapped a few shots of this and showed the staff what they might have in the store. The looks on their faces were priceless.

V-Day

Hope everyone has a lovely day. Last year this time I was working in Springfield and I wrote about the crazy nature of a restaurants on specials days. Below is an excerpt. I encourage you to catch the whole thing. It is a fun read.

There are a lot of workers cursing under their breath in the kitchen. Job titles, egos, and the task at hand are blended together to form how each person interacts with the other. Food gets sent through, and prepared by a team of five people. Three handling everything that is hot and two handling everything cold. The meals get sent from the cooks through a person that acts as a buffer between the back and front ends. Getting the food organized for the servers and making it look its best. Trying to keep all the trains running on time. The different sides remind each other of of their responsibilities as every meal is made. A checks and balances type system. When they are on top of things they resent this nagging but when things fall through the cracks they are thankful and apologetic. Two steak dinners are double checked and sent out.
