All Pro Chiefs Tackle Willie Roaf Retires
Big new out of Kansas City. One of the anchors of one of the leagues best offensive lines and offenses has retired. He indicated in a radio interview today that his body is not healing like he would have liked during this off season and he would rather bow out than give his team and its fans a sub par performance.
This is suprising news to a lot of Chiefs fans who have been feeling good about this offseason with a decent draft and the signing of Ty Law. It even looked like we were going to enter training camp drama free with all picks signed until this news.
There are a lot of “chicken littles” who are proclaiming the sky is falling. Generally the loss of a tackle wouldn’t send football fans running for the hills but Kansas City was shown the importance of Willie Roaf last year when their offense struggled with his absensce. No matter what happens he will be missed. He is an incredible player that dominated at his position working to keep Trent Green’s uniform spotless.
But I don’t think this is going to go down as badly as some people think…
It all has to do with preperation. Throwing someone into the tackle position in the middle of the season is a tough position to be put in. Offensive lines need time to gel. There is so much communication that goes a long with the position that is already a difficult one. There is a reason LT’s make a lot more money than RT’s do.
When you get a chance to be told you are the guy or you are in a position battle to be the starter on the football team and are able to prepare for that through out training camp and the preseason it goes a long to way.
Roaf’s replacment will have big shoes to fill and challenges to overcome but he will also be put in a position to suceed.
Watch how good a guy plays when he is not thrown into the fire…
Just in case you are curious; Larry Johnson’s yards per carry without roaf is 4.7. Not to shabby…
This offense will make things happen.

It just makes me even more angry that all the years with that great line were pissed away.
